![]() I'm terrified of the sea and of big open spaces so this game was a fucking nightmare, but I wanted to conquer it. The community and small use of maps helped me complete the game. If I were to play it again I'd just do console commands all the way though. Creative Mode likewise seemed like a step too far I did enjoy the way the Survival Mode mechanics gave structure to planning expeditions and created a sense of progression in gradually becoming more self-sufficient. At the time I just kept that off the table because of slippery slope concerns though. In hindsight I probably would have enjoyed it more if I just got into using console commands to spawn things once I had the blueprints and had discovered all the ingredient types, because I basically never enjoyed interacting with the crafting system. I basically compensated by doing an very minimal amount of base building and just hoarded lockers full of spare junk to minimize the drudgery when it was time to build something big. Collecting resources and crafting things was interesting for the first five minutes and after that it felt so transparently game-y and immersion breaking. I finished the game and enjoyed it a lot overall but these were the same main issues for me. especially if you think you don't like this kind of game. This game is definitely in my top 3 of all time and I can't recommend it enough. I literally was like 'this game does not stop delivering from start to finish' One of the things that just made it a total and complete masterpiece was that I already was in love with the game after exploring what seemed like the entire map and then about 75% of the way through the game you go to this entirely new and huge area that starts at the lost river and it just keeps getting more and more exotic, mysterious and fascinating. ![]() ![]() The mystery, beauty (in some places), the fear (in some places) and general ongoing experience of just amazing new things around every bend really worked for me.
